A small arms and light weapons marker will be donated to bukinafaso and Niger to combat the proliferation of small arms.
This was achieved through the European Union\'s funding of United Nations official development assistance.
In addition, the United Nations Development Assistance Office and the Office on Drugs and crime are conducting training workshops for national armed forces and security forces on marking and registering small arms and light weapons in bukinafaso and Niger.
These workshops will strengthen the capacity of national authorities to identify and trace illicit small arms and implement best practices for marking weapons.
In the context of the South
In South-South cooperation, the National Small Arms Commission of Côte d\'Ivoire will share its experience in the implementation of the national marking programme. This UNODA-
The cooperation of UNODC will assist African countries in the implementation of the international tracing instrument and the Protocol against the illicit manufacture and trafficking of firearms, their parts and components and ammunition, supplementary to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
These activities are part of joint United Nations operations.

Marking machines are provided to three West African countries.

They are also part of the UNODC Global Firearms project and its contribution to the Japan-funded United Nations Sahelian initiative aimed at combating transnational organized crime, including terrorism and illicit trafficking in firearms.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the international tracing instrument in 2005 to support the United Nations programme of action on small arms, providing a comprehensive framework for addressing the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.
The Firearms Protocol aims to strengthen and coordinate international cooperation in this area and to develop a coordinated mechanism to prevent, combat and eliminate the manufacture and trafficking of firearms, their parts and components and ammunition.
