They are a type of CNC cutting systems that use plasma. Plasma is a gas that is compressed and energized to the stage where some of its electrons break free from their nucleus and travel with them. A nozzle at the tip of the cutter concentrates this gas and introduces a spark, which turns that gas into plasma. Semi inert and inert gases are used to protect the area where plasma touches metal. The force applied by the plasma is strong enough to blow the metal, molten metal, out of the metal sheet, create a thin and clean cut with little slag. The plasma itself reaches a maximum of 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit temperature and easily cuts metal of depth up to 2 inches.
The part of these machines that make them so much efficient is their CNC (Computer Numerical Control) software. The CNC software, with the aid of HMI that ranges from computer to specialize built in HMI directs and controls the cutter torch with accuracy, speed and efficiency. HMI based software programs are the integral part of these systems. It ensures precise handling of this machine and accurate cutting of the metal.
These machines come in various shapes and sizes. The construction and components of CNC cutting systems are the major factors that make difference among CNC cutting systems. High quality machines feature solid, fully welded, heavy duty and unitized construction. Less expensive CNC plasma cutting machines use bolt together construction and less stable table or no table at all. A less stable cutting table guides to less accurate cutting of metals and less efficient machines.
These machines can also do terrible damages to human body. Operators of CNC cutting systems should take all the precautions before starting work. Operator should wear proper gloves, goggles and protective clothes so that he may be safe from side effects.
